Chapter 10

Unfortunately, I didn't run into anyone else on my way to the library. It was no use to delay the inevitable. I just had to do the honorable thing and face my punishment.

I pushed the library door open.

Zane sat at a table with books and scrolls piled high. His blood-red hair was braided over one shoulder, but it was coming apart.

Groaning, Zane tugged on his braid and then pushed his glasses up his nose though they didn't need to be moved.

Taking a step into the library, I cautiously moved toward Zane. Just because I didn't see Gage didn't mean he wasn't there.

Zane didn't look up from the book he was reading even when I was at his elbow.

"Find anything?"

Head jerking up, Zane's eyes widened, and his shoulders bunched up. After seeing it was me, he relaxed and sighed, tugging on his braid again.

"No. Not yet." He waved a hand at the pile on the table. "These all came today. Every reference of King Midas in the council's archives. If we are going to find anything, it'll be there."

I chose the seat next to him and sank down into it. Glancing around the library, I chewed on my lower lip.

Where was Gage?

Was he waiting in the shadows to jump me?

Did he enjoy making me worry about his attack?

Damn. What was I going to do? I couldn't focus like this. I had to know.

"Gage had to leave for a job."

My eyes swung over to Zane. "What?"

Zane offered me a small smile. "You seemed worried. So, I thought I'd ease your mind. He's going to be gone for a few days."

"Oh." I sagged in my chair far more relieved than I expected. So as to save face, I asked conversationally, "Does he do that often? Leave for several days."

Zane nodded, turning back to his book. "Sure. It's his job. He goes where the council needs him."

Interesting. Then I remembered what Luke had said and tensed. Gage was an assassin. An assassin for the council of mages. And I made him mad!

Good job. Just good work. Not like I didn't have enough to worry about. Now I had to worry about getting killed in the middle of the night. Or maybe poisoned. Poison was easier to get away with, wasn't it?

"Relax, Eva." Zane placed his hand on mine.

"Huh?"

"Remember your trigger. If you get too worked up..."

My eyes widened. "Oh, my God. I hadn't even thought about that." I shook my head and straightened myself out. "You're right. I have to stay in control. Relax." Think about something else. "What do you do for the council?"

"What do you mean?" Zane flipped the page of his book.

"Don't you all work for them?"

Zane made a sound in the back of his throat that sounded like a cross between a snort and a laugh. "They would love that. However, no. I do not work for the council. That's Adam and Gage's thing."

"So, what do you do?" I moved to the edge of my chair, genuinely interested.

Looking away from his book, Zane's eyes squinted at the edges as he smiled at me.
